Unfinished Business

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
© Jeff Wessman & Denis Loiseau

HE LOOKED LIKE HELL IN THAT HOSPICE BED
STILL WAKING FROM THE MEDICINE
I STOPPED SHORT AT THE DOOR
IT HURT TO SEE MY OLD MAN THAT WAY
I PRAYED FOR THE STRENGTH TO SAY
SOMETHING I NEVER SAID BEFORE

I’VE GOT UNFINISHED BUSINESS HERE IN MY HEART
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS – BEEN KEEPING US APART
ALL THE TIMES YOU WENT AWAY WHEN I WAS A KID
WAS IT SOMETHING YOU HAD TO DO OR SOMETHING THAT I DID?
IT’S NOT EASY TO FORGIVE YOU BUT I’VE GOT TO SEE THIS THROUGH
SO UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU

I HELD HIS HAND AND HE SQUEEZED MINE
LIKE A DROWNING MAN ON A LIFELINE
THEN HE LOOKED ME IN THE EYE
HE SAID, “THE END MAY COME SLOW OR FAST,
WE’VE GOT THIS MOMENT LET’S MAKE IT LAST,
‘CAUSE I’M NOT READY FOR GOOD-BYE”

I’VE GOT UNFINISHED BUSINESS HERE IN MY HEART
IT’S BEEN WORK IN PROGRESS, I DIDN’T GET THAT FAR
COULDA SPENT MORE TIME AT HOME WHEN YOU WERE A KID
SHOULDA SAID I LOVE YOU MORE OFTEN THAN I DID
I PRAY THAT YOU’LL FORGIVE ME; I’VE GOT NO EXCUSE
BUT UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU
NO UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU
